Richard Tan, CEO
From Failed Businessman to Global Entrepreneur

Richard started a business in 1990 selling a non-slip chemical for floors. Not only was the product unable to prevent slipping, it also ruined the floors in the process. Ultimately, it left him saddled with $600,000 in debt, and resulted in almost 20 lawsuits.

In 1993, Richard started a company called Success Resources to organize conferences all across Asia . A crucial test came in 1995. Just 6 weeks before a conference in Hong Kong , only 250 tickets had been sold for a venue that meant to accommodate 6,000 people. Richard had never cancelled a seminar before and was determined not to have this one be the first.

Determined to personally sell tickets for the conference, Richard travelled to Hong Kong . During that time, he was diagnosed with colon cancer. By travelling to Hong Kong despite his life threatening condition, the doctor thought Richard was crazy! However, seeing Richard’s unshakable determination, he agreed Richard could go, on the condition that he continues his treatment while in Hong Kong .

Richard began each day at 7.30 in the morning. One by one, he knocked on doors promoting the conference. He would start from the top floor and walk down every floor of the building to promote the conference. In the afternoons, the common time for lunch breaks, Richard went for chemotherapy.

In an unforgettable video footage of the 1995 National Achievers’ Congress in Hong Kong , Richard can be seen on stage without hair, presenting a talk before a crowd of 4,000 people! Richard said in a landmark speech, “If I do nothing challenging, I don’t leave a footprint in life by doing the very best I can. I cannot give my family the best.”

Singapore has acknowledged Richard’s vast achievements as the model for successful entrepreneurs by awarding him the prestigious 2003 Phoenix Award. Awarded by the Singapore Government, the Phoenix Award is given to just one successful entrepreneur from Singapore each year.

Richard was formerly the Director of Meta Group Asia Pacific, a strategic IT analysis and consultancy firm. He also currently sits on the boards of several international corporations.
